frequently asked questions

Why should I choose Austen as my occupational therapy provider?
Austen has been working in pediatrics since she graduated with her Masters in OT in 2011. She wants to support your child in achieving greater fulfillment in life.
She also values involvement from families, parents, and caregivers, and is ready to share all of her strategies and knowledge with you. She has been trained in a number of therapy modalities, and has chosen a specialty that she has found particularly effective. She has a practice allowing for flexibility around your schedule and location. She comes to you!

What is pediatric occupational therapy?
Pediatric OT can mean many things! But in general, it is a process facilitated by an Occupational Therapist that involves assessing and treating sensory-motor related issues with children. Pediatric OT's are trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat developmental concerns related to sensory processing, self regulation, fine and gross motor skills, visual-motor skills, visual perception, postural stability/core strength, coordination, and motor planning.

What is The Anat Baniel Method®?
The Anat Baniel Method (ABM) is a movement technique used to facilitate successful neuro-motor and brain development. It is a hands-on method that utilizes gentle touch and guided movements to awaken the brain to new and easier movement patterns. It is based on the understanding that movement provides the brain with the information it needs to grow, organize, and refine itself. Anat Baniel studied under Moshe Feldenkrais, founder of the
Feldenkrais Method, which improves human functioning by increasing self-awareness through movement. Anat Baniel has established innovative movement exercises that help create new and stronger neural pathways for improved coordination, strength, and vitality. Learn more here.

What is the Therapeutic Listening®?
It is a sound-based approach designed by an OT that utilizes an individualized progression of filtered music to organize the subcortical primitive brain, in order to access the higher cortical functions we need for regulation, organized movement against gravity, and appropriate adaptive responses. Learn more here.

Does my child need occupational therapy?
The determination of need for services is made by a review of evaluation findings, parent input, and child observation. If your child is experiencing difficulty in one or more of their activities of daily life, contact Austen for further discussion.

Do you have openings for new clients?
Austen's schedule is always in flux. So please contact her at austen@mindfulmovementtherapies.com or (503) 720-4634 to inquire about current openings.

Do you bill insurance?
Austen is an in-network provider for BlueCross BlueShield, Moda (Connexus, Beacon, Synergy, OHSU), Pacific Source, Cigna, and First Choice health plans. For those who are out-of-network, Austen will either submit a claim for potential reimbursement and invoice the client the remaining balance, or offer a private-pay discount. Austen recommends that you call your insurance provider to inquire about occupational therapy coverage, number of visits, and any pre-approval process required for out of network providers prior to the start of therapy if you choose to have claims submitted.

Where does therapy take place?
Therapy generally takes place in the comfort of your own home! Austen travels up to 30 minutes from her departing location without an additional fee. She provides services to families on the west side and south of Portland. If therapy at home is of concern, another location in the community can be discussed. Austen is also willing to provide services at a child's daycare, preschool, or private school.

What is the average therapy frequency and duration?
In an ideal world, the best outcomes occur with a therapy intensive (visits over consecutive days). However, keeping in mind the reality of your and your child's busy life, the average is one or two 55 minute sessions per week. Each session includes 45-50 minutes of direct treatment and 5-10 minutes to document notes, speak with parents regarding progress, and answer questions. Scheduling is flexible and can vary week to week depending on your needs.
